The current brand of populist governance in India—buoyed by claims of economic growth—is premised on a vision that champions Hindu supremacy. Not only has it tested the limits of secularism as enshrined in the constitution, but it is also destroying the quality of life in urban centres through rapid development. The dirtier it gets, the bigger the boom appears to be, nevermind the poison entering the system. The ideological aspirations of the majority are high off the fumes. The air—literally and figuratively—is becoming increasingly difficult to breathe.
In response to conditions from which many are seeking an exit, this version of REProduce Listening Room showcases five artists from different disciplines and across geographies, united by a lived and liminal memory of this landscape. Harsh, repellent, utterly intuitive, and inherently subjective, the works of sound and performance art they stage suggest ways to locate and find each other within the iterative arenas they create.

REProduce Listening Room will take over the Galiläa Church on the last day of Dystopia Biennial, 29 September 2024.

29 September 2024, 5-9pm, Galiläa Church
