The symposium Sonic Futurisms contextualises the thematic impulses of the Dystopia Sound Arts Biennale in resonance with the exhibitions, performances, and other accompanying events.

Among other discursive issues, the symposium explores an under-discussed conceptualisation of a transcendental future, particularly in relation to the current socio-political-ecological realities of the Indian subcontinent and globally: from repressive far-right regimes that constantly violate democratic rights and artistic freedom of expression, to enforced divisions in societies based on racial or casteist discrimination, as well as intensifying climate migration. How can contemporary artists working with sound and listening respond to these crises and imagine possible futures from a critical artistic position?

The symposium will explore these questions with the participating artists, curators, and guest speakers.
