How can the act of listening activate and materialise the unrecorded and inaudible traces in an archive? This question is at the centre of The Search for Hassaina’s Song and Other Phonophanies, which deals with the audio archive of the Linguistic Survey of India, a mammoth colonial project to capture and record all the languages and dialects of the subcontinent.
The project was spearheaded by the Irish linguist George Grierson in South Asia in the early twentieth century.
Listening to the hissing, crackling, rustling and static recordings, a field of microfictions emerges, revealing a trace of stories, voices and uncanny sounds that may not have found their way into the archive.
