I’m tired—who is the “I” in this title? Is it the artist, or is it the tire as a symbol—now exhausted—of unstoppable momentum—of the endless growth we have treated as a law of nature? But now the tyre floats in the Spree, completely spent, emitting the squeak of an old oil pump and shrouded in smoke—the residue of consumption that burns fossil fuels and of excess.
This failure did not happen on its own; it was accelerated by policies that are rolling back protective measures and by a global culture in which environmental pollution is just another status symbol. Seeing this is just as exhausting.
The artist actively steers the tyre – the very symbol of this failure – using his remote control. It seems to be an attempt to regain some control. In fact, the sight of him playing with this thing is perhaps the greatest irony we are faced with. Apart from the pun on ‘tired’ and ‘tyre’ 😉
Georg Werner studied Applied Cultural Studies at Universität Hildesheim (Diplom), Experimental Media Design at UdK Berlin and Sound Art in a master class with Ulrich Eller at HBK Braunschweig. He often works incollaboration with international artists and collectives in the field between art & technology. He is eager to learn and shares the knowledge he gathered along the way in workshops, lectures and seminars. His artistic approach is humble and multi layered – influenced by objects and situations, that he modifies, to be inviting to exploration and relation. Meanwhile they may raise the sensitivity of the viewers perception.
