Leila and the Poet – da lalala ti-ra is an essay film by Jasmina Metwaly encountering Egyptian composer Halim El-Dabh. Emerging from long-term research, El-Dabh’s story becomes a shared ground through which two sisters, navigating diasporic positions, find relations across distance and fragmented histories. The work renegotiates the relation between sound and image, and the different claims each makes on memory, evidence and truth.
Jasmina and Kamila Metwaly work across image, sound, activism, research and institutional practice. Their ongoing collaboration explores collective imaginaries, memory and the relations between seeing and listening. Working together, their practice is deeply engaged with forms of organising and mobilisation that activate knowledge beyond the structures they each inhabit. From Voice of the Wind Is Not a Metaphor to their long-term engagement with Halim El-Dabh, they trace how stories, archives and sonic histories travel across diasporic positions and disciplines.
