Des-habitar Escutas (Dis-inhabit Listening) is a research and artistic creation project carried out between 2023 and 2024 by Brazilian artists and researchers Lílian Campesato and Valéria Bonafé in the region known as Cracolândia (Crackland), in downtown São Paulo. The project resulted in a series of sound, audiovisual, and installation works. Over the course of two years, they engaged with Cracolândia, a territory in constant conflict, marked by profound social, economic, and political contrasts, as well as by ongoing police violence and state neglect. The project offers a critical reflection on this urban reality and charts an artistic path for imagining new ways of listening to the relationships and conflicts between people, places, and contexts. This trajectory seeks to disrupt habitual modes of listening that often disregard non-dominant ways of existence. To “dis-inhabit” listening requires an intentional openness to what lies outside oneself and to others. It implies a process of displacement—one that does not occur without effort. Such a de-habitualized form of listening can foster dynamic exchanges between bodies, experiences, and emotions.
Dr Lílian Campesato is a Brazilian artist and researcher whose practice combines reflective inquiry and inventive actions with sound, listening, and performance. Her works focus on listening as a space of conflict where voice and noise are central aspects. Campesato is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Copenhagen, conducting a research-creation project on inaudible aspects of listening.

Dr Valéria Bonafé is a Brazilian artist, researcher, educator, and curator. Her practice integrates creative, investigative, and pedagogical processes centered on sound and listening, unfolding in an interdisciplinary field that spans music, sound arts, sound studies, and artistic research, approached from decolonial and feminist perspectives. Bonafé is currently assistant professor at the University of São Paulo.
