A walking tour through the vicinity of Flutgraben. During the tour the participants are offered 6
audio pieces from teh Club Real project “Berlin- City of Species”. City of Species is a collection of
audio stories narrated from the perspective of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms and
freely accessible via our website.
Artists from Club Real accompany the participants on the tour and provide introductions to the
audio pieces.
The audio pieces are in German language. We offer written English translations of the audio
stories.
City of Species – Berlin’s history told by plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms
Berlin is often praised as a green metropolis rich in biodiversity. But more than human species are
usualy not part of the official urban history.
City of Species rewrites the history of Berlin from the perspectives of 32 species: plants, animals,
fungi and microorganisms who have shaped the city and continue to do so.
In a series of audio portraits, narrated in the first person (“Me as a mosquito …”, “We as bats …”), the living beings share their own biographies, interwoven with key moments of Berlin’s urban, political and cultural history. The aurochs recalls the racial and industrial projects of National Socialism; the German wasp links collective life in the present to the legacy of the East German past; the poppy speaks of colonial histories, remembrance and resistance; the tree of heaven tells of migration, globalization and the struggles of urban nature; zebra mussels reflect both ecological crisis and new forms of coexistence; and the green toad stages its protest against the exploitation of habitats. The stories are testimonies of human and more-than-human lives inextricably entangled in the continuous making of the city.
