Does the Earth have a sound, and how can we listen to it? Seismologist, Sergei Lebedev, and sound artist, David Stalling, have been collaborating on the audifications of seismic vibrations since 2018. Their soundscapes capture the fascinating richness of Earth sounds and include seismic waves propagating from earthquakes, microseisms created by ocean waves and weather patterns, whale calls and human activity. David and Sergei will present some of their work and discuss how it has changed their relationship to art, science and the world.
Sergei Lebedev is Professor of Geophysics at the University of Cambridge. After obtaining a PhD at Princeton University, he also worked at MIT, Utrecht University and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. He uses seismic and other data to study the interior structure and dynamics of the Earth. It was on his expedition to deploy seismic sensors on the North Atlantic seafloor that Sergei started to collaborate with David, who was an artist in residence onboard the ship, RV Celtic Explorer.

David Stalling is a sound artist working with acoustic and electronic sound, field recordings and scientific data, often focusing on the relationship between the human, the natural world, and technology. He studied Music Composition at Maynooth University, Ireland. His works have been presented in Ireland and internationally. Recent projects included Assembly (2025), the Ireland pavilion at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale; Prelude, Eruption, Tremor, Sleep (2025) at Magma Rising, Heong Gallery, Cambridge, UK; all these words (from Beckett’s The Unnamable) (2021-22) at Museum of Literature Ireland, Dublin; Under the Feet of Shadows (2024) by EL Putnam and Mike McCormack at MART Gallery, Dublin, and 18th Street Arts Centre, Santa Monica, CA.
