Embedded in the uniquely diverse South African fynbos landscape, this talk weaves together a contemporary journey in bioacoustic exploration with deep connectivity to the cultural heritage of the Khoe people. Moving from ocean to mountain, exploring the diversity of voice and meaning therein and coming full circle to create a sonic installation which honours the strength and resilience of people and wildlife through times of rapid change.
Dr Tess Gridley studies animal behaviour through sound to help inform the applied conservation management of wildlife, often incorporating citizen science and adopting low-cost technology applicable when working in Africa. Her research uses acoustic, video, and photographic monitoring to track animals non-invasively. Tess is intrigued by what drives animal behavioural variation at different scales (individual, population, and species) and how this variation promotes differential responses to environmental pressures, health, and welfare status. She is committed to effective science communication and removing barriers to involvement in science, whilst honouring the essential insights gained through careful listening to those with ingrained local ecological knowledge of the animals and environment.
Claire Homewood is the creative force behind CareCreative which seeks to facilitate creative, diverse, and participatory spaces underpinned by an ethos of care for both people and the planet. Over the last decade CareCreative has been involved in many events, from street festivals to live painting to community activations, and is behind many murals in public and private locations around Cape Town. She uses creativity to facilitate conversations, interactions, co-designing and artmaking. Much of the work undertaken by CareCreative focuses on environmental issues, with the intention that the artworks are used as platforms and points of discussion for topics around: the environment, education, social inclusion, youth, women, indigenous culture, and community collaboration.
MAK10NE is an internationally acclaimed graffiti artist living and working in Cape Town. His career has spanned decades during which time he has worked in South Africa and abroad, collaborating on projects in Greece, Germany, Belgium, USA, France and Reunion. He combines his conscious mind set with a depth of experience and a desire to push the art form to produce work that is cutting edge and thought provoking.
