Workshop
This multidisciplinary initiative invites the public to dive deep beneath the waves during “Listen & Sea” Silent Lab experiences. Wearing a pair of headphones, participants embark on a guided underwater audio journey with a high level of biodiversity. As they listen to the grunts, clicks, whistles, and singing of the bay’s inhabitants, they translate those sounds into brushstrokes onto the wall, layering the mural with a visual representation of the ocean’s acoustic vibrancy.
The audio, “participaintory” experience is a sophisticated collaboration between Silent Lab, the African Bioacoustics Community, and CareCreative, featuring evocative poetry by local artist Toni Giselle Stuart.
Globally, bioacoustics is a rapidly growing field of research and there is huge potential for bioacoustics research in Africa. Africa hosts an immense diversity of behaviorally unique acoustic species, environments, and increasing development, resulting in noise pollution. It is with these realities in mind that the African Bioacoustics Community was initiated in March 2018. The ABC was founded to support growth in the field of bioacoustic science on the African continent, striving to provide opportunities for African scientists, students and wildlife workers to learn from and network with experts in the field through international conferences, workshops, and courses.
